The Power of Partnership

Morehouse School of Medicine is a young institution with a vital mission: to train compassionate health care professionals in medicine, research and public policy toward the eradication of health disparities in communities around the globe and at home. Our students are highly qualified, yet many need assistance to remove the financial barriers that would deter their medical education. The assistance of our partners is vital to our students’ continued success.

MSM 2015 Partner Events

April 16: 40th Anniversary and Hugh M. Gloster Society Recognition Celebration

With 2015 marking our 40th anniversary, Morehouse School of Medicine commemorated this milestone in conjunction with the Gloster Society Recognition Celebration. The Gloster Society Recognition Celebration highlighted the commitment, community support and engagement of MSM’s faculty and staff to ending health disparities and conducting cutting-edge research. Guests heard from students who will change the health trajectory of our world and saluted the winner of The Louis C. Brown Vanguard Award. This award is named for the late Louis C. Brown, M.D., one of MSM’s esteemed founders. The honor is bestowed upon individuals or organizations whose pioneering spirit and demonstrated leadership have made a significant impact in the elimination of health disparities in our local and global communities.

September 18: HeLa Conference’s 20th Anniversary

Medical researchers have used immortal human cells, known as HeLa cells for decades for research into cancer, AIDS, radiation and toxic effects, gene mapping and many other scientific examinations and advances. The original cells belonged to Henrietta Lacks, a black cervical cancer patient from Virginia. Although Lacks died, the cells from her tumor did not and the cultures grown from the tissues have been employed to create vaccines to treat diseases such as Polio and HPV. Each year MSM joins with the Lacks family in celebrating this great legacy and embracing the emerging science in stem cell and other cell therapy advances in women’s health care. In the next 10 years, it is critical that we channel our students’ life experience and diversity to maintain innovative academic programs that will broaden their exposure to new ideas of leading edge practice and research.
